    Description

Circa 1930’s NAVAJO Ganado / Hubbell WHIRLING LOGS Blanket 63”x31” - Good Luck Spruce Logs
Offered here is a circa 1930, very nice Navajo weaving that measures 5 feet 3 inches long by 2 foot 7 inches wide or 63” x 31”.  It is attributed to the Ganado, Arizona ~ Hubbell Trading Post weaving area and is in excellent condition.  It was hand-woven by an expert weaver on a primitive upright loom of all Native hand-shorn, hand-carded and nicely handspun long staple Churro cross and Merino quality sheep wool, both weft & warp.  Here is a great old Whirling Logs rug with fine stepped meandering side borders and red, black and white end borders.
Whirling Logs crossing each other was at the time of its weaving, a sacred symbol used in southwestern Native American weavings, baskets, pottery and jewelry.  The main connotation of the symbol was the 4 directions (north, south, east & west) and the winds from them.  It is generally felt that the whirling log was a symbol of good luck or well-being, friendship, and the four stages of life being birth, youth, old age and death.  In total alignment with the deep sentiments of other American people, since 1940 the Navajo, Hopi, Papago & Apache people stopped incorporating the whirling log symbols in their crafts due to their beloved symbol looking so much like the Nazi swastika.  The Navajo signed a proclamation stating, “Because the above ornament, which has been a symbol of friendship among our forefathers for many centuries, has been desecrated by another nation of peoples, therefore it is resolved that henceforth from this date on and forever more our tribes renounce the use of the emblem commonly known today as the swastika or fylfot on our blankets, baskets, art objects, sand paintings and clothing.”  To find a weaving with this symbol nowadays on a genuinely old weaving helps to confirm the dating.  The likeness of the two symbols happened purely accidentally.  The old whirling spruce log is usually woven with the cross being vertical and horizontally aligned, as opposed to the Nazi swastikas usually being oriented on the diagonal.  The swastika did not become the symbol of the German Nazi party until it was adopted in 1920, so this nice piece is innocent of any perceived connection.
It has an even, smooth weft count averaging 26 per inch and a warp count of 7 per inch.  The selvage cords are all in original, excellent condition.   Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft selvages are 2-spiral cords.  The corners are all four tight, original and in excellent condition. The tassels are all four original & excellent.  There is some red bleed in one white end stripe which should also come out in the professional cleaning process.  Both sides are shown in photos.  Colors are great in this piece of old American Indian art and they are:  hand blended & carded natural grayish brown, ivory white & dark chocolate brown along with hand dyed aniline turkey red.  Complete with lazy lines, one bold design.
Normal wear, tear and losses commensurate with age of artifact.
    * Photographs often are the greatest testament to actual condition.  Please study the pictures carefully as they are the greater part of the description.
